What is a radial piston motor?
Designed with a radial arrangement of pistons, radial piston motors are generally Low Speed High Torque (LPHT) motors. Within the cylinder block there are several pistons arranged perpendicular to the drive axis in a star formation. Functioning as a high power direct drive they are able to deliver in a very compact specification.
The benefits of radial piston motors
Radial piston motors are durable with very few moving parts that don’t require a great deal of maintenance. The main features that work well within hydraulic systems include:
- Power density
- Durable design
- Compact spec
- High performance
These benefits have transferred well to to working reliably in mobile machinery for many years with modern technology also being adopted into mature designs.
Radial piston motor applications
Due to their capabilities for excellent low speed operation with high efficiency radial piston motors are most typically found in excavators, cranes, ground drilling equipment, winch drives, concrete mixers, trawlers and plastic injection moulding machines.
